Wanderers Stars Help Kick Off 5-day Anti-Racism Event
Bolton Wanderers in the Community and Show Racism the Red Card today kicked off a run of five anti-discrimination events involving over 750 youngsters from local schools, during United Nations Week of Action Against Racism.
Each day will see over 150 pupils a day welcomed to the Toughsheet Community Stadium, in which they will take part in workshops aiming to highlight the importance of diversity in society and how together we can celebrate our differences.
The opening day saw Men’s First Team players Nathaniel Ogbeta and Jack Iredale accompany BWFC Women’s Milla Hodson, Eleanor Seals, Laila Stanley and Lacey Taylor. The players took the time to sit down with the children to discuss what they’d learnt across the day, and promote being an ally for people of all backgrounds.
Across the week the event will engage with 13 different primary schools from across Bolton in a fun and interesting day of activities and stadium tours. The event is the largest of its type that leading anti-racism educational charity Show Racism the Red Card has done alongside a football club.
Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card said:
“Show Racism the Red Card are delighted to partner with Bolton Wanderers in the Community during United Nations week of action again racism.
“This is the first time in the charity’s 28 year history spent with one football club over 5 days in a row educating 750 young people. It is a great way to highlight the importance of the UN’s week and in particular the UN’s anti racism day on Thursday.
“Finally thanks to all at Bolton in the Community staff, young people and teachers from Bolton schools. In particular the players from the women and men’s teams who have and will attend this week.”
The event forms part of the work the Charity does as part of the Premier League Primary Stars project, which aims to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills.
Lisa Simpson, Programme Lead (Education & Mentoring) said:
“Hosting an anti-discrimination event in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card isn’t just about taking a stand against discrimination; it’s about fostering a community where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is embraced, and equality is non-negotiable.
“Together, we raise our voices to amplify the message: racism has no place in our society.”
