How Bobby became a Play Leader
Bobby is a current Year 5 Pupil at Red Lane Community Primary School who has recently completed the Play Leaders course as part of our PL Primary Stars provision. We sat down with him to see what he thought about his experience.
Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to be active and develop important life skills.
Designed by teachers for teachers, the curriculum-linked teaching resources support English, Maths, PSHE and PE, with flexible activity ideas, worksheets, lesson plans, assemblies and exclusive videos. PSHE topics include resilience, diversity, self-esteem and fair-play.
Bolton Wanderers in the Community staff work with teachers to deliver fun, educational sessions in a range of subjects within local partner schools across Bolton.
One of these such resources, of which Bobby completed, was the Play Leaders course. Through the course Year 5 pupil plan and prepare their own PE lesson that they then deliver to Year 2 pupils independently.
Bobby said: “What I enjoyed about Primary Stars was playing with my team and planning the lesson was quite fun, teaching the Year 2s in the end worked out quite well!”
What started at week 1 with building free standing towers from marshmallows and spaghetti, quickly took shape over the coming weeks as Year 5 learnt the importance and how to demonstrate proper planning, giving instructions and creating an organised and inclusive environment.
One teacher said: “They’ve got so much out of it and it was nice to see the children themselves taking control and having that freedom and responsibility”.
Another teacher told us that as Year 5 transition into Year 6, they plan to take their newfound Play Leader awards with them and become leaders, role models and points of contact for all other pupils at morning and lunch time breaks.
