Bolton Wanderers in the Community Celebrate International Women’s Day with Local Schools

In recognition of International Women’s Day Bolton Wanderers in the Community’s Premier League Inspires team held a girls’ football tournament at Bolton Arena. The tournament saw 60 female participants from 8 local Secondary Schools across Year 8 and Year 9. The aim of the day was to celebrate young women in sport within our community and to discuss the positives of being a woman.

In between matches, the participants worked together to create a beautiful piece of joint artwork to represent women as part of International Women’s Day. The artwork depicted a silhouette of BWFC women’s team, and the participants were asked to fill it with words that they feel define themselves, women in their lives and/or women they strive to be. The artwork is displayed in our wellbeing hub to celebrate the work of our participants.

Sophie Cruzon, Sharples High School Staff Member, reflected on the event “I thought the event was brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed it, never mind the students! I thought it was very well organised, with quick fire games that kept the excitement levels high. The second half of the day was brilliant as the students got to explore areas of the stadium they have never been before. Feedback from the students was very positive on the way home and they really enjoyed the day. A really good day all round – thank you for fitting us in!

The participants were all presented with medals and International Women’s Day t-shirts by players from BWFC Women, BWFC Women’s Manager Myles Smith and BWFC Chairman Sharon Brittan.

The winning team from Bolton St Catherine’s Academy were presented with the winner’s trophy to take back to school and celebrate their achievement.
